CONTRACTOR INSURANCE BY TRADE

Contractor Insurance for Every Trade in California

Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all when you're a licensed contractor in California. We specialize in contractor insurance and understand trade-specific risks, CSLB requirements, and coverage needs. Whatever you build, install, or repair, we provide coverage aligned with the work you perform.
TRADE-SPECIFIC COVERAGE

Why Your Trade Determines Your Insurance Needs

California's CSLB issues contractor licenses across more than 40 classifications, and each one carries a unique risk profile. The coverage that protects a general contractor on a new construction project isn't the same as what a painting contractor needs. Using the wrong policy, or the wrong limits, can mean denied claims, compliance violations, and financial exposure that no contractor should face.

Risk Profiles Vary by Trade

Higher-risk trades face stricter requirements and greater liability exposure. Lower-risk trades may fall under different risk classifications and require accurate underwriting placement.

Correct Classification Matters

Incorrect classification can result in denied claims and legal or financial exposure. Policies must accurately reflect the contractor’s trade and scope of work to ensure coverage applies.

Specialized Contractor Focus

We primarily insure licensed contractors, while also covering certain non-contractors such as homeowners purchasing builder’s risk. This focus allows for faster quoting, accurate classification, and coverage tailored to trade-specific risks.

OUR COVERAGE

What Coverage Do California Contractors Need?

Most licensed California contractors need a package of commercial coverages, with additional policies layered on depending on trade, project type, business structure, and contract requirements.

General Liability Insurance

Covers third-party bodily injury, property damage, and completed operations. Commonly required by general contractors, project owners, and commercial clients.

Workers' Compensation Insurance

Required in California for contractors with employees. Also required by the CSLB for certain high-risk trades. Ensures compliance with state law and licensing requirements.

Contractor License Bond & Specialty Coverage

Every licensed contractor in California must carry a $25,000 CSLB Contractor License Bond. Contractors operating as LLCs must also carry a $100,000 bond and General Liability coverage. Additional policies may include Inland Marine, Commercial Auto, and Builder’s Risk.
HIGH-RISK TRADES

Special Considerations for High-Risk Trade Classifications

Some contractor trades carry elevated liability, environmental exposure, or regulatory requirements that demand coverage beyond the typical exposure needs. If you work in any of the following classifications, make sure your policy is built for your actual risk profile.

CSLB-Mandated Workers' Compensation Trades

The California Contractors State License Board requires workers' compensation coverage for five trade classifications regardless of whether you have any employees on payroll. Operating without it can result in license suspension:
C-8 Concrete Contractors
C-20 HVAC Contractors
C-22 Asbestos Abatement Contractors
C-39 Roofing Contractors
C-61/D-49 Tree Service Contractors
If you hold any of these licenses, workers' comp is not optional. It's a condition of maintaining your CSLB license. We handle this coverage routinely and can get you compliant fast.

Trades That Routinely Require Specialty Coverage

Certain trades have coverage needs that go well beyond standard General Liability and Workers' Comp. Based on the trades we insure daily, here's what additional coverage is typically required:
Pollution Liability: Asbestos abatement, lead abatement, mold remediation, leak detection, and any trade involving hazardous materials or environmental release risk.
Professional Liability (E&O): Design-build contractors, solar installation, engineering-adjacent trades, and any work where errors in design or specification could trigger claims.
FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need different insurance for different contractor trades?

Yes. Core policies apply to most contractors, but limits, endorsements, and additional coverage vary by trade. Coverage should match the specific risks of the work performed.

What insurance is required to get a CSLB contractor license in California?

All California contractors must carry a $25,000 Contractor License Bond (or an additional $100,000 LLC Bond if structured as an LLC). Workers' Compensation Insurance is also required for any contractor with employees, and is mandated by the CSLB for five specific high-risk trade classifications even without employees (C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39, C-61/D-49). General Liability is not required by the CSLB but is required by virtually every general contractor, project owner, and commercial client before allowing work to begin.

Can I get insurance for a high-risk trade classification like roofing or asbestos?

Yes. Coverage is available for high-risk classifications, including roofing, concrete, and asbestos abatement, through carriers that specialize in these trades.

Does my General Liability cover all the work my trade involves?

Coverage depends on how the policy is written and classified. If the scope of work is not accurately reflected, claims may be denied. Policies should align with actual operations.

I'm a subcontractor. Do I still need my own insurance?

Yes. Most general contractors require subcontractors to carry General Liability and list them as additional insureds. Without coverage, access to jobs may be limited and liability exposure increases.

How quickly can I get a certificate of insurance for my trade?

Typically the same day once coverage is active. Certificates can be issued quickly to meet job requirements.

Do you cover contractors who work in multiple trades?

Yes. Policies can be structured to cover multiple classifications and align with the full scope of work.
